Politics: Kaduna Assembly establishes a panel to investigate El-Rufai's government
Kaduna Assembly establishes a panel to investigate El-Rufai's government.
A 13-member committee was established by the Kaduna State House of Assembly on Tuesday to look into how the $350 million that the former governor Nasir El-Rufai's government used.
The committee will also examine further government-initiated projects and expenses from 2015 to 2023.
This came after a motion made by Mugu Yusuf, the legislator for the Kauru seat, was adopted.
During his presentation, Yusuf requested that the House look into every debt that the El-Rufai administration had taken out.
Yusuf Liman, the Speaker of the Assembly, then formally established the committee to investigate the matters.
In the best interests of the state, he directed the committee to conduct a thorough investigation.
"The assembly cannot sit and watch uncomplimentary comments and character assassinations on the state leadership," the speaker stated. For this reason, I proposed that the Speaker form a committee to look into the accusations and critical remarks made about them.
"This is the only way the state can restore its faith in its collaborators, development partners, and loan and grant providers; if we don't do this, our indicators will deteriorate to the point where no one will want to do business with us."
On March 30, Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, declared that he had taken over a massive $587 million and N85 billion debt from the El-Rufai administration.
Speaking during a town hall meeting in Kaduna, Sani claimed that on May 29 of last year, the previous administration had left behind 115 contractual commitments.
